THE CLUB...

The Canberra Ocean Racing Club was founded in 1984 to allow Canberra people to compete in ocean races, which the Club did successfully for 4 years in the yachts Mercedes IV and Nadia IV. In 1988, the Club's focus was changed to allow members to spend more time cruising, and since then the Club has owned fast cruising yachts: Portobello, then Canberra, and the latest is "Namadgi", a Bavaria 44, which was purchased in February 2004.

The Club is organised as an incorporated association, and its affairs are managed by an elected committee.

There is a well-established booking system which allows individual members to use the yacht with their families and friends, and to sail with other members as well.

CORC sailing area Sailing activities:

The Club's yacht is used for:

  • family cruising in Pittwater, Sydney, and the Hawkesbury River,
  • trips along the NSW and Queensland coast,
  • cruising in Tasmania, the Whitsundays, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu
  • offshore voyages, and
  • occasional offshore races.
Since "Namadgi" was purchased in February 2004, members of the Club have taken her cruising as far afield as New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tasmania, and the Whitsundays, as well as competing in some ocean races, including the Sydney to Hobart race.

Social activities:
The Club organises a regular series of social events in Canberra, and an informal gathering of members is held at the Canberra Yacht Club on the last Tuesday of every month, starting at about 6.30 pm. Prospective members are welcome to join these gatherings and ask for any information they may require about the running of the Club.

Newsletter:
A newsletter, "Spindrift", is published every couple of months to keep members up to date with the latest club activities and events.

The marina:
The Club maintains a marina berth at The Quays Marina, at Church Point, on the shores of Pittwater, in the northern part of Sydney. The Quays has a modern floating wharf, fuelling facilities, a restaurant, and a secure private car park for the use of yacht owners. The journey from Canberra to Pittwater takes about three and a half hours by road.

Training:
The activities of the Club provide plenty of opportunities for new members to undertake offshore voyages with an experienced crew. In addition, training to all levels of proficiency in offshore seamanship, safety, and navigation is available through Teki Dalton's Adventure Training School. Teki can be contacted at teki@ozemail.com.au.

New members:
The Canberra Ocean Racing Club welcomes new members, but the number of members is limited to 25. Membership entails buying a share in the Club's yacht, and sharing the running expenses.  Click here for further information.
